Have you ever heard of a program called NC Beautiful? No? Well you are not alone.
NC Beautiful is a private non-profit agency that provides up to $1,000 in grants to certified K-12 teachers in schools across North Carolina. The grants are used for environmental projects involving students to get them outside and helps them to begin a lifetime journey of environmental awareness and good stewardship.
The organization’s goal is to award one grant in each North Carolina County. Over the years, grants have been awarded for some of the following projects:
*Creating gardens of all types, including pollinator, vegetable, and community
*Webcams installed in bluebird houses to stream the happenings in the nests
*Water quality and water conservation studies
*Development of outdoor classrooms
*Solar powered watering systems
* Recycling: paper, plastic, food wastes to make compost for gardens
Garden grants are by far the most popular use of funds. Teachers have been able to introduce students to rain gardens, raised-bed vegetable gardens, hydroponic gardens, up right gardens, etc. Raised bed gardens are particularity beneficial for exceptional children. Those who are physically challenged are able to roll up to the garden to dig, work the soil, plant, etc, allowing them to experience both the benefits of physical work and a feeling of success regarding gardening and growing living things.
